Shorter
days and cooler nights.
Chapter
notes:
September
has arrived, the days are getting shorter and fall is in the evening
air, but we hope for more great riding weather to come.
The
September calendar is full and we hope to see you out there somewhere!!
And
remember folks that the 2012 planning meeting will be coming up sooner than we
expect. We will need lots of input for dinner rides and other activities
for 2012. Have you found a special place you would like to share? Another
restaurant that needs to be reviewed? Plan ahead to bring your ideas.
Hope
I haven’t missed anything. If I have, let me know and we’ll get a
message out or fix it for next time!!

Note
from Betty:
Thank
you all of Chapter H Gold Wingers for the lovely plant & card. It is
blooming nicely and the color is wonderful. Ron has put it right outside by
the kitchen window so I can see it often and think of you all. I am also
healing well and feel like "I am blooming well and in the pink' also.
Thank
you all for your prayers and thoughts.

Chatter - - - Randy Reid
Well
here we are again. End of another month and needing something to write about.
Why is it so hard to come up with topics to write about? I ride with you all a
couple of times a month which should give me plenty to write about. The views
we have shared, the fun destinations. The riding experiences that we have had
together. Then I thought about the report that Lee gave at our last meeting.
Where he praised all of us for the leadership in our group and how he felt on
the ride home. This is something that I have always had around me and never
really gave it much thought as I have always been surrounded by good leaders
that have always set the right example. So thank you Lee for noticing and
bringing it to our attention. Then I think further back and realize that I
didn’t share some of the other things that happened on our trip to District
this year.
So
what did we do while at the district rally? We competed in the Hay bale
decorating contest which I thought given the competition we had a fair chance
of winning. I mean we did have lights on our hay bale. I need to share
some photos with you so you can see what we had to compete with and what your
chapter entry looked like. And some of the events that happened while we were
there. So to start with there was Erv, Chet & Kathy, Terry & Edie, and
Debbie and I that rode down together that Thursday morning. Lee & Margret,
Cliff and Pam followed us down later the next day. Wayne and Laura joined on
Friday as well. We quickly set up camp on the fair grounds and then
delivered our hay bale to the hall for the competition. Delivered our puzzle
pieces for the appreciation gift to our outgoing District Director and then
relaxed for the evening. The next day we went to the opening ceremony and
heard about what was available to participate in. Not just the district staff
had been busy but some of the chapters had come up with some clever ways to
raise funds for their charities. The chapter that had security for the rally
set up a jail house that you could place bounties on certain individuals and
have them arrested and locked up until the appropriate bond could be posted
for their release. Another had an 18 wheeler set up to demonstrate the blind
spots that a truck driver has and the No Zones that we need to be aware
of.
Friday
morning Wayne and Laura showed up and some folks recognized their bike from
the cover of wing world. So we had celebrity status Friday morning. Wayne then
led us on a ride out to Mt. St. Helens that was quite the adventure. We made
it back just in time for Chili.
There
was real life line dancing and boot scooting going on Friday and Saturday
night.
Saturday
morning we attended the Master Tour Rider and Couple of the Year Breakfast. We
got to meet some of the Master Tour Riders and almost all of the couples of
the year. We had several that were past COY’s as well. A fun Time was had by
all and there were certificates of appreciation that was handed out to both
the COY and the Master Tour Riders for their participation and service.
Saturday at noon I gave a class on the use of the new rider education
database. There were several chapter educators there for that. Then Terry and
I competed in the bike games. I can’t express how much fun I have competing
in these events. The comradely and fellowship we have with our fellow riders
is a lot of fun. I really encourage you to participate in these events. There
were only 3 exercises in this year’s event the slow ride, the drag and drop
and trailer handling. Okay maybe it was so fun because I won and Terry came in
second. I think everyone that participated had a good time. Then there
was a little mishap a call went out across the fairgrounds that a rider was
down. Who could it be we didn’t see anybody on the bike game course? So
where is that rider? Then you could see the first aid responders running
toward the tractor trailer rig that Chapter X had set up for rider education
of the No Zone display. There was someone sitting in a chair with
several ladies circling him with water and band aids. Who could it be?
And yes as we approached the crowd the gentleman in the chair did look
familiar. It was one of our guys. Erv. He had managed to slip and fall out of
the truck door to the ground and had hurt his hand. Poor Erv I thought then I
looked around us and noticed all the ladies hovering around him and holding
his hand trying to comfort him and thought what a lucky guy. Way to go Erv
maybe you can show me how you do that and I can have a turn next time. But on
the more serious side he was given top notch care the rest of the night and
the rest of the trip.
Saturday
evening was soon upon us and the closing ceremonies were started. The crowd
was forming around the stage finding places to sit on the hay bales that had
been strung out in front of the stage. As the announcements were made
something unusual took place. When they would have been just running over all
of the events of the day and who had done whatever our Region Director was
summoned to the stage to make a special presentation to someone that was
unable to attend Wing Ding this year. He stated how this person had been a
driving force in bringing rider training to the North West corner of our state
and that the National Team in GWRRA had recognized this person at Wing Ding
with a plaque. And frankly he was a tad jealous of this individual and wished
that the plaque bore his name. At first I had no idea who he was talking about
as we have several very dedicated rider instructors here in the North West.
But when he called my name I was left speechless. I know some of you that know
me well may find that hard to believe but I was. I could barely walk to the
stage. Once arriving at the stage I was lost for words. I do remember thanking
Mike Huddnell for bring it back for me and as I gazed across that crowd of our
fellow gold wingers I was again lost for words other than thank you thank you
so much. This just goes to show you that you just never know who is watching
you and how you can make a difference. Well the rest of the night was just
awesome after that. Yes I did get a trophy for the bike games. And yes I
did take first place which was nice. Debbie and I also got a plaque of
recognition from district for our contribution to the district team for the
last year. Did I mention that the rest of the night was great?
Sunday
morning came and yes my helmet still fit my head. We attended church services
which Brother Ralph Juarez delivered and then broke camp and prepared to head
home. And at that point it was just as Lee had described in last month’s
chapter meeting which started this note in the first place. A plan was laid
out and put into motion to get our wounded fellow rider home safe and sound.
Just one more reason to ride with your friends and be thankful we have them.
Thank you Erv for being our friend and we are all glade that you have
recovered.
Yes
ladies he has recovered. You can stop hovering now.

next time

Road
Hazards
Traction
trouble. Watch for patches of loose sand or gravel.
While
we must always be reading the road signs, we must also learn to read the
road. A change in the color of the road could be the sign of a change
in the road condition. It could be a sign of oil, fuel, loose sand or
gravel on the road, all of which can affect the bike’s traction.
BE
AWARE AND RIDE SAFE.

Tech
notes: Don't panic if it won't start!
Sometimes events conspire to take our heads out of the game and we
can't get our bikes to start with just a quick punch of the Start
button. When you get no response from the Start button the first
thing you should do is check the Engine Stop Switch. It just may have
"inexplicably" changed position. Make this a habit! If
that doesn't solve the problem, a quick check of the Ignition Switch will
tell you if you are trying to start the bike with the switch in the
Accessory position. Also, trying to start the bike with the Reverse
Switch pushed in will be just as fruitless as pushing the Cruise Control Set
Switch and expecting it to fire right up. In any case just put
the switches in their correct positions (or have a friend do it for you as
is sometimes the case) and you are good to go. If none of the above
has cured your problem then you are probably looking at a dead or dying
battery....but, that's another story...
